The perfect church service would be the one we were almost unaware of; our attention would have been on God. But every novelty prevents this. It fixes our attention on the service itself; and thinking about worship is a different thing than worshipping ... 'Tis mad idolatry that makes the service greater than God.
-C.S. Lewis

This is one of those things that I was never aware I was guilty of, but Lewis makes a great point. Where is our attention during worship? I'm not suggesting that there is some obvious solution to this, but ought we hope for, strive towards, pray that we come away from worship knowing we were saturated in the presence of God?

How do we fix our attention on God when the band just totally messed up the music, the phone in the back is ringing, our kids are being loud, or any number of distractions that will occur? Perhaps we are actually more concerned with the elements, and success of how the service is going, as suggested by Lewis.

Always Worshipful

Is this a dilemma that can be overcome? Can ever completely focus on Christ. Well... Is God all powerful? Of course He is! Aren't we are called to always be worshipful, in all we do?

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. -1 Thessalonians 5.16-18

If we are always rejoicing, always praying, always thankful in ALL circumstances, Then our attention should always be on God! All of these distractions, or more concern about the worship service than He who we are worshipping, should instead become little doses of sanctification! If we are always in a worshipful mindset we are never far off from God, at least not relationally --since God is everywhere always.

In worship, God imparts himself to us.
-C.S. Lewis

Let's pray for one another family. That our King grips us, by the power of His Holy Spirit we are taken to a place in our worship where God is the only thing that stands out, and the only thing that matters, the only subject of our worship.

Eager, as always, to worship together!
