Sunday's Songs
O Worship The King
10,000 Reasons
Be Thou My Vision
Come Behold The Wondrous Mystery
Jesus, Thank You

We plan to begin with O Worship The King this Sunday. In preparation, let's explore what it means to worship.

"... acknowledging that someone or something else is greater—worth more—and by consequence, to be obeyed, feared, and adored. Worship is the sign that in giving myself completely to someone or something, I want to be mastered by it." -Harold Best

We are indeed mastered by what we worship. Is it any wonder there is so much addiction and sin when we worship anything less than God? Our condition leaves us with a looming question: Do we want to be mastered by God? "Absolutely not," cries our natural flesh! But by God's grace, He gives birth to new desires within us: the desire to be mastered by the majesty of our beloved Maker & King.

For the love of Christ controls us...
-2 Corinthians 5.14a

"Worship of the living and true God is essentially an engagement with Him on the terms that He proposes and in the way that He alone makes possible." -David Peterson

Made possible by the blood of Christ we are invited into the worship of our King.

An Awakening to the Reality of His Holiness

A woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that Jesus was reclining at table in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment, and standing behind Him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed His feet and anointed them with ointment. -Lk 7.37-38

Sometimes I consider my attempts at worship and wonder, "Am I doing this right?" Then I think about our lady in Luke who depicts the heart of worship. There is complete adoration, on her knees, weeping at His feet, loved much, forgiven much, loving much: genuine worship of her King Jesus. In loving submission to Him, she shows us what it looks like to have been awoken to the reality of His holiness.

"Worship is the submission of all our nature to God. It is the quickening of conscience by His holiness; the nourishment of mind with His truth; the purifying of imagination by His Beauty; the opening of the heart to His love; the surrender of will to His purpose – and all of this gathered up in adoration, the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin." -William Temple

Shall we approach the throne prepared to Worship the King this Sunday?

Always eager to worship with you,
